What Do Roofers Do If It Rains During a Roofing Project?

Roofing contractors like us hope for clear weather with every roofing job, but we also come prepared in case the weather happens to be uncooperative. In today’s post, local roofing contractor Gresham Roofing and Construction shares a look at what we do if it rains in the middle of a roofing project.

Protective Coverings

We bring protective coverings enough to cover the entire roof area, primarily to cover an unfinished roof. Most roof installations are completed over the course of several days so the roof must be covered when it’s not being worked on. Professional roofers are trained to quickly cover the roof in case of sudden rain. We make sure that the protective covers are free from punctures to prevent even the smallest amount of rainwater from making contact with the unfinished roof.

Applying protective coverings is not as simple as throwing dust covers over furniture; it has to be done quickly and safely. This is why every roofer needs to be trained on how to do this efficiently and with proper safety measures. Safety is a critical factor as the roof can become very slippery when it rains, which increases the risk of injury.

Treated Materials

Using properly-treated materials for building the roof adds an extra measure of protection against moisture damage. This is why we only use treated lumber, plywood, and oriented strand board (OSB) for framing and decking. These materials make the roof less susceptible to warping and delaminating. They also make the roof more durable, and ideal for a second installation.

After the Rain

We will resume work on the roof as soon as the weather has cleared. As a homeowner, you won’t have to worry whether or not this will delay the completion of your roof; we factor such delays into our roof estimate and completion timeline. Before we resume roofing work, we will make sure that the roof and all unused materials are as they were before it rained. Replacement for moisture-damaged materials, if any, will be ordered immediately.
